Find No Cavil

This was a sparely (and poorly) updated blog about a law student. Now it is being reborn as a cliche: a Midwestern transplant living in New York City (here, Astoria) I am going to do my best to not write about work. Instead this will be an effort to document and record my attempt to have a life outside of work. Hopefully it won't be too dull.

long time no see

hello everyone, (the one or two of you). things are going well here - last week was spent playing poker, going to a yankee's game, celebrating "rocktoberfest" by karaoking, and going to an octoberfest at bohemian hall beer garden. all were a lot of fun. the work crew is proving to be a fantastic group of people to hang out with, i'm drinking a bit too much (and smoking a little) but i don't mind it right now. oh yeah, i ended up at the black bar association happy hour on friday too - that was a lot of fun.

last night i got a girl's number, we'll see what happens with that.

work is good too, i arraigned a rapist (100K bail) and i am supposed to get an office in the next two weeks.

oh yeah, tomorrow starts 100 things in 1000 days. my list is about 1/3-1/2 complete completion date? June 28, 2009. once i get the list in some sort of order, i will post it.

one and a half weeks down

something like 154 to go...hooray

work is going really well so far. that being said, i still don't have any actual responsibility, that comes next week. i'm starting with 45 people, they all seem pretty cool so far. most are from NYC/NY state/East coast. one other girl is from chicago - we've decided we have to be friends. I went out with a bunch of co-workers on friday night, and outlasted them all. not having a couch sucks.

my new computer is supposed to be coming in soon, so I will be updating a bit more regularly. well, here's to hoping at least.

there's the update for you.

red letter day

A good couple of days all around: yesterday I got all but 3 of my thank-you cards done. Today I went into Greenwich Village where I found a great used bookstore and got some fantastic deals, then I kept walking and finally found a liquor store that stocks rye whiskey.

Also, I saw two women almost get into a fight waiting for the 6 train. A whole lot of "you ugly" "no, you ugly" "bring it bitch!"

What a sunday

DMV

On my 2nd try, I got my new drivers license today. It's a boring story and can be summed up like this: The NY DMV wanted more proof that I was a licensed driver for longer than 6 months (I had to get an abstract overnighted to me) than they wanted that my address was valid (they didn't even look at my lease).

Buncha morons.

Next adventures: couch and groceries

Made it

Left at 7:30 AM (central time) on Thursday morning. Drove until 11:30 PM (eastern time). Stopped in Netcong, NJ. The drive into NYC was really easy, almost eerily so. The landlord checked in about 6 times, but after that things have cooled down. This is easily one of the nicer apartments i've lived at since i've been a young nomad and since I brought little with me it feels empty. I've hung a bunch of pictures and unpacked almost everything, so the place is looking very homey.

I went out in Greenich (spelled wrong) Village last night. It was fun and a good diversion from sitting around my apartment. I get to go grocery shopping for the first time today, that should be an adventure. Also, I have to start recycling. I have no problem with that, it's just that I will never remember to do it.

Other observations: the drive in general was really easy. Pennsylvania is pretty, but after a couple of hours you get sick of it. Also those Appalachian gas station bathroom are biohazards, by and large.

Tommorrow is the first day I get to go into work (if only for paperwork). Should be interesting
